All of us are familiar with the term "Cholesterol". Cholesterol is an essential substance that is produced by our body but is also obtained from animal-derived foods like meat, fish,butter, ghee, milk, egg yolk etc.Our body needs some cholesterol. At normal levels, it is required for body's normal functioning, but too much of its presence in our body would increases the danger of heart attack and other heath problems. It is recommended that all the adults should have his or her cholesterol measured at least once every five years. Cholesterol in the body consists of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol (Bad cholesterol), high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol (Good cholesterol), Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) and Triglycerides.
The total Cholesterol amount in your body is the sum of LDL, HDL, VLDL and Triglycerides.
